Race Judicata
A number of law schools and legal organizations across the country hold community-wide fundraisers under the name “Race Judicata” by hosting an event, usually a run/walk 5k, in the name of a beneficiary charitable organization.
Race Judicata derives its name from a legal term of art, Res Judicata (Latin for “a matter [already] judged”), which is used to describe a doctrine where courts may avoid relitigation of matters previously and finally adjudicated.
The Charleston School of Law has developed a tremendously successful event in the Charleston community since its inaugural 5k in 2007. In only five years, Charleston’s Race Judicata has involved over 1,000 participants and donated over $40,000 to Lowcountry Housing Trust.
